FINE ARTS 11 - 2 CREDIT OPTIONS
In order to graduate students are now required amongst other things to obtain two credits in Fine Arts. Students genuinely interested in Fine Arts, who have been enrolled in junior Fine Arts courses are advised to enroll in a four credit Fine Arts course in theatre, band or visual arts and apply that credit to their graduation requirement.
Students interested only in getting their graduation requirement should take one of two credit options (60 hours) listed below. Stagecraft 11 (listed under four credit courses) may be used to fulfil the criteria for both Fine Arts and Applied Skills.
FINE ARTS 11 - MUSIC FAMU 11F
This course is designed for students who are not choir or band students, but who like music. The course will cover popular music from the Renaissance to the present. Final evaluation will involve practical applications such as producing music videos, mock radio programs, and other creative choices.
FINE ARTS 11 - ART ART 11Z
This course will cover the elements and principles of visual arts. Students will primarily work with design. Therefore an ability to draw, although an asset, is not absolutely necessary.
The study of art in relationship to its surroundings will also be examined. Evaluation will involve practical work.
FINE ARTS 11 - VISUAL ARTS FAVA 11F
This course is a shortened version of the regular VA3D 11 course. Please see write up under 3D 11.
MUSICAL THEATRE 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 MUTH 8-12
Thinking of auditioning for the musical next year? Want credit for all those after-school hours? Musical Theatre 8 through 12 will give you hands-on training in performance: stage, dance and choral. The course will only run if enough interest is shown, and roles will be auditioned after sign up. Because this is an after-hours course, you will still be able to take your other arts electives in the timetable. Four credits.
Remember that, as this is a credit course, criteria for Fine Arts curriculum must be met.
FINE ARTS 11 - PHOTOGRAPHY FAPH 11F
This courses is a beginners' course in photography. Students will learn how to compose and develop good pictures.
FINE ARTS 11 - MEDIA STUDIES FAMS 11F
This course will focus on electronic media - television and radio. Students will examine the role of these media in our society, as commercial enterprises, forms of fine art and constructs of reality. Evaluation will include basic production work in these media.
FINE ARTS 9/10 - MEDIA STUDIES XMS 9/10F
This half semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular Media Studies course. It may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.
FINE ARTS 11 - VOICE AND IMPROV VI 11F
This course is for students interested in Drama who cannot take a full Acting 11 course. The 10 week course wil concentrate work in improvisation/theatre sports and polishing the actor's voice, which could include preparatory work for Speech Arts festival
Please note: This course is two credits only and will not qualify the student to proceed to Acting 12. It is also not eligible as a focus or support course for Career Prep.
ART 8 AR 8
An introduction to Art, developing fundamental skills in drawing, painting, design, printmaking, sculpture, graphics and other art activities.
ART 9 AR 9
This course will focus attention on a variety of techniques employed in the artistic expression of different subjects. The course is divided into three sections.
- Sculpture and 3-Dimensional Design
This segment will explore various media used in sculpture and modeling. Students will create designs in wire, wood, paper, pulp board, papier mache, etc. by developing these ideas into three dimensional forms such as: constructions, sculpture, modeling, mobiles and/or stabiles.
- Pottery
This segment will present some basic techniques involving the use of clay. Proper methods of clay preparation and handling will be demonstrated. Projects will include pinch pots, coil work, slab work, relief and intaglio design. Glazing of some projects along with kiln use will also be considered.
- Drawing and Painting
This segment is intended for students who have some ability in drawing and painting and wish to improve their knowledge in these areas. Various media will be available including charcoal, India ink, wax resist, water and tempera paints, pencil crayon, chalk and oil pastel.
Projects will include still life, figurative drawing, abstract painting, motion, perspective and art history. Mixed media will be explored.
ART 10 AR 10
This course will focus attention on a variety of techniques employed in the artistic expression of different subjects.
Suggested areas of study would include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, modeling, mosaic or collage, printing methods, and large murals. A development of individual art expression will be encouraged.
Prerequisite: Recommend Art 9
ART 9/10 AR 9/10F
This half semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular Art 9 and 10 courses. It may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.
VISUAL ARTS 2D 9/10 VA 2D 9/10
Students will explore various media including pencil, pencil crayon, pastels, watercolours, acrylics, pen and ink, and screen printing.
Some projects will be directly related to practical use in the graphics industry such as package and poster design.
ART 11 AR 11
This is an advanced general art foundations course. A minimum of four out of the six visual expression areas will be explored.
This course will include continued exploration of the elements and principles of design through a variety of experiences in at least four of these areas: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, textiles and graphics. Image development while applying different strategies is emphasized. Encouraged are an awareness of art history, art appreciation and reasoned criticism.
Prerequisite: Recommended Art 10
VISUAL ART 2D 11 VA 2D 11
This course is designed for students who want to focus their study in art in the particular areas of drawing, painting and graphics.
Students should have some art experience prior to, or concurrent with this course, however art foundations will be incorporated where necessary.
Continued development of imagery through a variety of experiences is emphasized. Instruction may include the following: line, point, cross-hatching, shading, pen and ink, water colour, brush techniques, colour, block-printing, silkscreen, etching, lettering, design and layout of posters and other advertizing materials.
Prerequisite: Recommended VA 2D 9/10 or Art 10
VISUAL ART 3D 11 VA 3D 11
This course is designed as a continuation of the fundamentals of design and its application to specific design problems. Where necessary, art foundations will be incorporated. The course will provide opportunities for explorations in ceramics, textiles and sculptures using a variety of media.

Students will work with a variety of 3D materials such as ceramic, sculpture, paper mache and fabric.

DRAMA 8 DR 8
This is an introductory course for students with limited drama background. Drama 8 will touch on movement, mime, improvisation, theatre games, choral speech, and puppetry.
DRAMA 9 DR 9
Drama 9 is a course in creative or developmental drama. We will be working on basic skills such as mime, movement, improvisation, role-playing, and speech, while developing personal skills like concentration, trust and team work.
Students should be aware that some written work is required.
DRAMA 9/10 DR 9/10F
This half-semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular Drama 9 and 10 courses. It may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.
DRAMA 10 DR 10
This course marks the transition between Drama and Acting. Beginning with creative drama, the course explores movement and mime, then works toward performance of story theatre for elementary audiences.
Students should be aware that some written work is required.
ACTING 11* ACT 11
This course is an introduction to formal theatre. Because theatre is primarily concerned with communication to an audience, this course will deal with a new discipline in its own right. The theatre course will use the creative skills developed in Drama 8, 9 and 10, and add to them a history of the theatre, plus the technical skills of communication.
Students should be aware that some written work is required.
Prerequisite: Preferably DR 10 or an active interest in acting.
*Students interested only in fulfilling 2 credit graduation requirements are advised to select from specific 2 credit options.
ACTING 12 ACT 12
The groundwork in Acting 11 will be put to good use in Acting 12. After an introductory unit in Theatre Sports, the course will concentrate on acting styles, including Shakespearean, Restoration and Commedia. After a short course on audition techniques the course will finish with a production of student scenes.
Prerequisite: ACT 11
DIRECTING & SCRIPTWRITING 12 DS 12
Students will be expected to direct a one-act play for performance; in addition, there will be a formal study of directing methods. Students will also be expected to write plays and study the techniques of playwriting. This course will only run if there is sufficient enrolment.
Prerequisite: ACT 11
(Students may be admitted at the teacher's discretion if the student has had experience.)
STAGECRAFT 11 STFS 11
This is a course for those interested in what goes on backstage. Covering the fundamentals of backstage jobs, from lighting to stage management, the course will teach design principles in such areas as set, costume, make-up and lighting, as well as allow the students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to school productions and the work of other classes.
Students should have had some experience with classroom or extra-curricular drama.
This course may be used to fulfill the criteria for both the Fine Arts and Applied Skills graduation requirements.
STAGECRAFT 12 ST 12
An advanced course in backstage theatre for which Stagecraft 11 is a prerequisite. In addition to more fully developing the topics of Stagecraft 11, this course includes work on sound, costumes, and in-depth work on stage management.

There are two performing options for Band 9 through 12 - Concert Band and Stage Band.

CONCERT BAND 12 BA 12
The Concert Band is the main ensemble for brass, woodwind, and percussion. These bands will involve the majority of students in the Music Program and perform a wide variety of musical styles, including Classics, Overtures, Film Music, and some Pop music. The Concert Band will perform in concerts, festivals, and on tour.
Prerequisite: previous level of Concert Band or permission of instructor.

STAGE BAND 12 MUCO 12
The Stage Band is open to Grades 9 to 12 players of trumpet, trombone, saxophone, keyboard, guitar, bass, and drums. Stage Band musicians will study and perform Jazz, Latin, and Rock styles, and they will have an opportunity to learn solo improvisation. The Stage Band will perform in concerts, festivals, and on tour. Stage Band class size limits. Stage Band cannot accommodate all music program students.
STAGE BAND PLAYERS ARE STRONGLY URGED TO ELECT CONCERT BAND OR CHOIR IN ADDITION TO STAGE BAND IF THEIR SCHEDULE PERMITS.

CHORAL MUSIC 1 CHO 12
Choir members will study and perform varied styles of vocal music including Classics, Folk Music, Broadway, Pop, Rock and Jazz. No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to sing and attend all class sessions/rehearsals. The emphasis of choir class will be on group singing activity. Members will have an opportunity to sing solos and perform in concerts, festivals and on tour.
Prerequisite: For Choral Music 12 is Choral Music 11 or permission of instructor.
